ITIL Practitioner Certification Prepares Employees for ITIL Framework
Short for Information Technology Infrastructure Library, ITIL covers vital practices in place for the IT service management department. Designed to help the IT service management connect with the requirements of a business, having a skilled professional with in-depth ITIL knowledge can boost the potential of your entire IT framework and infrastructure.
As your company grows, so too does the need for a comprehensive framing network, which is why having at least one IT member with extensive ITIL knowledge extremely valuable. An ITIL Practitioner certificate demonstrates they have the knowledge necessary to work within the ITIL framework and handle nearly any task or issue that may come up. Here is what an employee will go on to learn when obtaining an ITIL Practitioner certificate.
ITIL Foundation Certificate
It is important to understand before moving forward with an ITIL Practitioner certificate, your employee must first hold an ITIL Foundation certificate. The foundation certificate provides your worker with a strong foundation in working with an ITIL framework. It ensures your employee completely understands what ITIL is and how it can be used to improve the capability of IT service management.
If your employee has worked within the ITIL framework before, chances are this certification should not prove challenging as it is an entry-level course. However, it is required before obtaining the ITIL Foundation certificate.
What the ITIL Practitioner Certificate Course Covers
The main purpose of the course, outside of building upon current knowledge regarding the ITIL infrastructure, is to educate your employee in the Continual Service Improvement (CSI) approach of setting up the infrastructure and working within its foundation. This particular approach goes into three areas of ITIL, each of which will prove beneficial to your worker (and in turn, your company). These three areas are communication, organization, as well as, measurement and metrics.
In order to best educate your employee on these three areas of success within the ITIL framework, each is broken down into an additional nine steps. These nine steps include designing for the user experience (UX), a focus on performance and value, progress iteratively, start from the current position (starting from scratch within the framework is not always necessary), observe, remain transparent, collaborate and always keep it simple. Each of the nine steps is covered and how it relates to the ITIL framework. By taking advantage of the nine steps for each of the three areas of Continual Service Improvement, success in the ITIL framework increases while time required to reach a desired goal drops.
Obtaining the ITIL Practitioner Certification
As mentioned earlier, it is necessary to obtain an ITIL Foundation certification before applying for the practitioner certificate. The exam itself is broken down into 40 multiple-choice questions. It is an open book exam, so your employee may bring in notes and the course text material as guidance, although the test is timed at 135 minutes, so some speed is required to complete the test. In order to pass, they must score at least 70% (miss no more than 12 of the questions).
Moving On From the ITIL Practitioner Certification
When your employee becomes ITIL Practitioner Certified it will give them the knowledge to improve your ITIL framework and boost their own productivity at the same time. However, there are elevated certifications they can go after, should they (or you) so choose.
For starters, it is important to note it is not necessary to pass the ITIL Practitioner Certification Exam before obtaining an ITIL Intermediate Level qualification. However, after receiving certification as an ITIL Practitioner, it does count for three credits towards obtaining an ITIL Expert Certification. In order to obtain an Expert Certification, 17 credits are required. As your employee already holds an ITIL Foundation certification, they will have a point already towards the Expert certification.
If you heavily rely on the ITIL scheme, the continued education of your employee is important. This may be enough reason to propel your employee into an eventual ITIL Master Certificate. This is the highest-level certificate available within the ITIL scheme. In order for your employee to obtain the certification they must first obtain the ITIL Expert certificate, worked within an IT service management position for at least five years, and then apply for the ITIL Master certificate.

The more your employees know the better off your own company is. When growing a business, having a strong internal network and core framework is essential.
